The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) and the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) are advising veterans about a new toll-free phone number veterans must call when seeking treatment at a non-VA hospital emergency room (ER).
The new number to call is 1- (844) 724-7842.
Veterans must call this number within 72-hours after treatment at a non-VA hospital ER to facilitate administrative action that must be taken for the VA to consider paying non-VA ER bills later.
If a veteran is experiencing a medical emergency, he or she should immediately seek care at the nearest medical facility. Veterans do not need to check with the VA before calling 911, an ambulance, or being taken to any non-VA hospital emergency room.
A medical emergency is an injury, illness, or symptom so severe that without immediate treatment, you believe your life or health is in danger. If you believe your life or health is in danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department right away—and remember to call the toll-free number above within 72 hours afterwards.
